Hotels near Edinburgh Airport ranked from worst to best according to TripAdvisor

With many Scots preparing to jet off for some summer sun in the coming months, it's important to fully plan your trip.

In order to avoid missing your flight, it is always a good idea to spend the night before in a hotel near the airport — particularly if you live far away.

With a decent variety of options close by, it can be hard to tell where would be the best and most comfortable place to stay.

To investigate which of the hotels near Edinburgh Airport have the best — and worst — reputation amongst visitors, we took a look at TripAdvisor, where each one has been assigned a rating out of five.

We also took a sample review from each one, to give you an idea of what guests think.

According to the online travel company, here are all of the hotels near Edinburgh Airport ranked from worst to best.

Moxy Edinburgh Airport

Rating: 2.5/5

Number of reviews: 54

Ranked 153 of 164 hotels in Edinburgh

Coming in at last place, and by a fair margin, is the Moxy Edinburgh Airport with an average rating of 2.5/5. While some TripAdvisor users stated that it was serviceable for an airport hotel, others slammed then "extremely rude and unprofessional" staff and "awful" food.

What one visitor said: "The room was better than I expected, small, but newish/fresh feeling and very comfortable. The food on the other hand - just awful. It's all frozen stuff either deep fried or reheated. We were starving, and there's no other options at night at the airport, so this was a big disappointment. The staff were mostly not present or uninterested. The one person who put in any effort was a very pregnant lady who, although the most helpful, seemed exhausted. If they spent a bit of money improving the food offerings, it would be a great experience. Saying that, I'd probably still stay here if need be, but I'd make sure to bring my own food"

DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh Airport

Rating: 4/5

Number of reviews: 1,120

Ranked 112 of 164 hotels in Edinburgh

Jumping up to an average score of 4/5, the DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh Airport fares a lot better. Visitors praised its "friendly, warm, enthusiastic" staff and "fab swimming pool" — though others claimed to not get a good night's sleep.

What one visitor said: "One night (thank goodness) or I would have to get physio for my neck. Clean room and beds were comfy, couldn't say that about the pillows. Be as well sleeping on paper. Had to get another two delivered to the room but made no difference. Come on Mr Hilton, you take a 5 star rate for the rooms, why not buy 5 star pillows! Positive is the shuttle bus is back on to take guests to the terminal."

Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Airport

Rating: 4/5

Number of reviews: 1,050

Ranked of 102 of 164 hotels in Edinburgh

If you're on a budget, you can't go wrong with the Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Airport. While some TripAdvisor users took issue with the level of cleanliness, others called it "spotlessly clean". The food on offer was also mostly praised by guests.

What one visitor said: "Stated here before and after our holidays. All areas were spotlessly clean. Without exception every member of staff was extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The food in the restaurant last night was lovely. It’s basic pub grub but served piping hot on hot plates and presented very well. The price for food and drink is very reasonable considering it is an airport hotel. Tried most of the other airport hotels but this is the best and our favourite."

Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh Airport

Rating: 4/5

Number of reviews: 391

Ranked 1 of 9 special hotels in Edinburgh

Those looking for a hotel close to the airport need look no further than Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh Airport, which lies within walking distance. Visitors praised it as "clean and practical", and applauded its "friendly and efficient staff".

What one visitor said: "I cannot remember the last time I felt so comfortable from the minute I walked into a hotel lobby. Bear in mind this is a typical airport hotel, where lots of guests stay only for a night before catching a flight. Nevertheless the staff here really takes interest in you, doing everything they can to make sure you get a pleasant stay. I am so happy we chose this hotel and will come back!"

Norton House Hotel & Spa Edinburgh

Rating: 4.5/5

Number of reviews: 1,786

Ranked 44 of 164 hotels in Edinburgh

If you're after something a bit more luxurious, and don't mind being a bit further from the airport — though still just 10 minutes away — Norton House Hotel & Spa Edinburgh is the clear winner on this list with an average rating of 4.5/5. TripAdvisor users commended its "spacious and clean" rooms, "lovely" breakfast, and "outstanding" service.

What one visitor said: "On arrival we were upgraded to the Cramond suite which was a wonderful surprise, especially as we had stayed in this room many years ago. The suite is luxurious and a delight to stay in. Afternoon tea was wonderful as was evening meal, food amazing. To top off a wonderful stay breakfast in our room. All staff have been so attentive to detail and made our stay such a pleasure."
