A hospital patient bit a nurse on the arm after he protested being moved to a ward for people with Covid-19. As a result of the bite, the nurse needed injections to prevent tetanus and hepatitis.
Awdear Khaledi, 23, carried out the vicious assault while a patient at Llandough Hospital on May 4, 2020, after taking exception to being placed in a ward for people suspected of having coronavirus. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday heard he became "increasingly agitated" and demanded to be returned to the other ward.
The defendant was banging on a locked door of the ward and as victim Judith Campbell went to make some checks she saw he had entered an office where there were two other nurses. They were trying to restrain him and Ms Campbell tried to assist but he was too strong.

Khaledi pushed one of the nurses into a cupboard door and knocked over a chair before becoming even more aggressive and refusing to leave. Prosecutor Byron Broadstock said: "In the course of the struggle, (Ms Campbell) heard a nurse say to her 'He's got your arm' and observed the defendant biting her right upper arm."
Ms Campbell managed to pull it away from him but an injury had been caused. The bite had broken the skin and she was admitted to hospital for treatment, which included a course of antibiotics.
Due to his behaviour, the nurses decided to leave the office and closed the door on him. He continued to act aggressively and threw furniture in the room until more staff members removed him. He was then placed in safe holds and arrested.
The defendant was also involved in an incident in Leeds in March 2021 when he assaulted two police officers and a nurse working at a police station by spitting at them. He was initially taken into custody after acting suspiciously in the car park of Leeds Magistrates' Court.
Khaledi, of Splott Road, Splott, Cardiff, later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and three counts of assaulting an emergency worker. The court heard he was of previous good character.
Defence barrister Julia Cox said her client had been remanded in custody since the offences in March 2021. She said this was equivalent to a three-year prison sentence.
Judge Jeremy Jenkins sentenced Khaledi to a total of 13-months imprisonment. This was made up of nine-months imprisonment for the assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Llandough Hospital and four-months consecutive for the offences committed in Leeds.
