A 93-year-old woman was left "writhing in pain" at the foot of the stairs for over nine hours waiting for an ambulance. West Midlands Ambulance Service said the incident was down to "hospital handover delays", but Beryl Murray's family has called the wait time "totally unacceptable." They told Birmingham Live that "something has to change" to prevent a tragedy.
The great grandmother was "in agony" after her right leg gave way while she was moving from her walker into a stairlift on Tuesday afternoon (March 22). The pensioner was able to reach for her careline alarm, which notified the ambulance service at 5.22pm.
Her son Stephen, 68, and his wife Wendy, 64, also received the alert and rushed to her aid, driving 70 miles from their home in Stonesfield, Oxford. But paramedics didn't arrive until 2.33am the following morning - more than nine hours after the initial report, which was filed as a "category two" call.
