Horses died at the Grand National, but are calls to end it fanciful?

The Grand National is always a headline-making event in the sporting world but in recent years, animal rights campaigners and more have forced the issue front and centre in terms of safety amid continuing deaths of horses.

That trend continued at Aintree on Saturday as, while Corach Rambler came home to claim the £500,000 prize, protesters breached the perimeter security and made their way to the track – several of them reaching it – which caused a delay to proceedings just as the horses and jockeys were exiting the paddock.
