Saddle your horses and grab your mallets: the new Netflix documentary Polo will be cantering onto our screens tomorrow.
Produced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, it’s a deep dive into the ultra-competitive world of polo.
Polo itself is played on horseback and involves two teams of four competing to score goals, by hitting a ball back and forth through the goalposts on either side of the field. Mallets are involved, and each game consists of six timed intervals of seven and a half minutes, called chukkas.
Harry’s love of polo of course is well known. Since moving to the US, he’s joined the Los Padres team, which is captained by Nacho Figueras, who also appears in the documentary.
“He’s a very good rider,” Figueras has said about the prince. “He’s a very good athlete, he has great eye-hand coordination. He’s very competitive. He’s a very good polo player.”
Here’s what to know.
What’s it about?
Polo pretty much does what it says on the tin: it explores the elite world of polo players. It’s five episodes long and follows some of the best players in the world as they complete at the US Open Polo Championship in Florida.
The documentary promises to explore the sport’s rivalries, the intense training, and of course, what goes on both on and off the pitch.
Those include the father and son duo, Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso. Adolfo was a legend in the sport and his son is training
“I want to win against my dad, I can say that I beat he greatest of the sport,” Poroto says in the trailer, while Adolfo replies, "I am very proud of my son but I try to beat him."
There’ll also be appearances from the polo prodigy Timmy Dutta, from pro Louis Devaleix and from Nacho Figueras – a close friend of Harry’s and another famous player. "Imagine going on a horse at 35mph with someone coming at you at full speed,” he says in the trailer.
"Polo is not just a sport, polo is a lifestyle. We eat, we breathe, we sleep polo.”
“This series offers audiences an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look into the passion and determination driving some of the world’s elite polo players, revealing the grit behind the glamour,” Harry said in a statement.
“We’re proud to showcase the true depth and spirit of the sport — and the intensity of its high-stakes moments.”
Will Harry and Meghan make an appearance?
The pair are executive producers on the show, but don’t actually make an appearance themselves – as far as we know.
Is there a trailer?
Sure is – and it looks high octane. Watch it here:
When’s it out?
The series is set to drop on Netflix from December 10.
