Horrifying moment deer is chased and killed by out-of-control dog in Richmond Park

This is the terrifying moment a dog chases a deer before mauling it to death in Richmond Park.

A shortened video clip of the latest fatal incident was shared by the Royal Parks Police on social media.

Metropolitan Police officers also posted an image of a man walking away from the scene near Sheen Cross with his spaniel at about 12.30pm on Monday.

Royal Parks Police said on X, formerly Twitter: “Do you know this male, or perhaps more likely, do you recognise the dog?

“We would like to speak to the dog owner in relation to a fatal attack on a deer in Richmond Park.

“As a reminder, It is illegal to allow dogs to chase deer.

“Dog walkers must ensure their pets are under close control at all times and if there is any doubt about their temperament or recall ability, then keep them on a lead.”

It is estimated that three to four deer are killed by dogs every year.

Paul Richards, a manager at Richmond Park, described the event as “deeply distressing”.

He told the Richmond and Twickenham Times: “We can confirm that a dog chased and attacked a deer in Richmond Park yesterday.

“Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and home to around 630 red and fallow deer, which roam freely in this wild landscape.

“The Royal Parks are a sanctuary for wildlife, and it is illegal to allow dogs to chase deer… if there is any doubt about a dog’s temperament or recall ability, it must be kept on a lead or walked elsewhere.”

He added: “This event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible dog ownership in protecting the park’s wildlife and ensuring the safety of all visitors.”

Dogs are one of the leading causes of deer casualties in Richmond and Bushy Parks.

A force spokesman added: “Police were called at 12.38pm on Monday to a report of a deer fatally injured by a dog in Richmond Park.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate the owner of the dog. No arrests have been made.”

In 2021, a dog owner was fined £600 after letting his pet chase and maul a deer in Richmond Park.

Police released footage of the attack taken by a cyclist who formed a barrier with other passers-by around the Red Setter to try to protect the animal, which had to be put down.
