Honeysuckle suffers first ever defeat as Teahupoo wins Hatton's Grace at Fairyhouse

Honeysuckle tasted defeat for the first time in her career on Sunday as Teahupoo landed the Hatton's Grace at Fairyhouse.

The eight-year-old super mare was sent off the 4/11 favourite for the 2m3½f contest as she aimed to win the Grade 1 for a record fourth time and take her racecourse record to 17 wins from 17 races.

But the Henry de Bromhead-trained runner, ridden by Rachael Blackmore, had to settle for third as Klassical Dream and Teahupoo passed her out in the home straight at the Co Meath venue.

Trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by Jack Kennedy, the ground turning soft ahead of the race proved key as Teahupoo got his head in front at odds of 20/1.

Speaking after the race, Elliott said: "It was brilliant. He was very good last year on softer ground. We ran him on good ground a couple of times and probably made a mistake (in doing so). We were still learning about the horse, but a great performance.

"Jack gave him a wonderful ride. He let it all happen in front of him. It's brilliant. We've a great team behind us and the likes of these lads (owners) supporting me is something else. Getting these horses is unbelievable."

On Honeysuckle's run, De Bromhead commented: “It’s a horse race and unfortunately she got beaten and that’s it. We’ve had some run with her for so long and there we go. They’re going to get beaten one day. She’s been incredible and fair play to the winner.”

Paddy Power reacted to the result by cutting Constitution Hill into 4-9 favourite from 4-7 for next year's Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, while Teahupoo was cut from 66/1 to 25/1. Honeysuckle has been pushed out by the same firm from 4/1 to 6/1.
