Lee Bullen has urged his defenders to be on their guard when free-scoring Elgin City hit Ayr for this Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup opener.
The sharp-shooting Borough Briggs side scored 21 goals in pre-season outings against Clachnacuddin, Lossiemouth, Fraserburgh, Keith and Forres Mechanics.
And the Highlanders hit the goals trail while keeping a clean sheet through five games.
Somerset boss Bullen isn’t fooled by their League Two status and reckons City could be a tough nut to crack this weekend.
He said: “It doesn’t matter what league they are in, this is a cup game, a one-off.
“And they’ll come down here and make themselves solid, so it’s up to us to try to unlock the door – without leaving our back door open.
“It’s a tough game. No doubt you’ll see some shock results here and there in this competition but hopefully we’ll be in a position where we can take care of business.”
United were due to face Falkirk yesterday (Tuesday) in a closed door fixture as the preparations for the competitive season continued.
And Bullen admitted that he’s still on the lookout for fresh faces to augment the squad that he’s already assembled.
He said: “It would be nice to get a couple of extras bodies in the door to get them in the groove and give them an understanding of how we want to play.
“But overall the squad is good enough to get through these cup games.
“Sometimes players like to play their cards close to their chests to see what kind of options they have. But we have to be patient so we get the right ones in to balance the squad.”
The Post understands that new signing, French midfielder David Bangala, has passed the English exam he sat at the weekend in order to progress his visa application.
Bullen revealed: “He felt that went very well. Now it would be great to get the kid here. He’s desperate to come over.”
United’s only injury concern for Saturday is over Alex Jeanes, who sustained an ankle knock in training.
