Honda Improves The Civic Type R In The US After Killing It In Europe

Honda has given the Civic Type R a round of updates for 2027, making its already feisty hot hatch sharper, more comfortable, and better equipped. There’s just one small problem for enthusiasts on the other side of the Atlantic: Europe isn’t getting it.

The updated CTR hits the United States this month with a discreetly redesigned front fascia, and it’s not just change for change's sake. It now has a larger grille opening and a deeper front splitter to reduce turbulence and improve airflow velocity, helping the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine stay cool when you’re pushing it hard.

The splitter also increases downforce, because apparently the Type R’s aerodynamic package wasn’t sufficiently serious already. Honda has also reworked the suspension damping in +R mode to improve road-following performance while reducing bouncing and impact harshness. The company says the changes deliver better stability and handling when pushing the car hard.

Mechanical Changes Aplenty For The Hottest Civic

The brake pedal gets attention, too. Honda added a yoke spring to reduce linkage play, resulting in a more direct pedal feel. But wait, there’s more. Honda also tweaked the rev-matching system to deliver faster engine response during downshifts. That’s particularly relevant because the Civic Type R remains gloriously old-school underneath all those modern electronics: it’s still manual-only.

Before we step inside, we should mention that Honda is adding a Meteorite Gray Metallic color for 2027. As for the cabin, it gets heated front seats as standard equipment, and that’s not the only change. The interior looks and feels a bit nicer now thanks to Ultrasuede on the upper dashboard and front door panels, along with new diamond-pattern dashboard trim.

Some of the interior bits, such as the aluminum shift knob, console trim, and door handles, are darker now, while the climate controls and knobs have a black finish. Elsewhere, the center console gets two USB-C ports above the existing wireless smartphone charger.

The Honda Civic Type R Gets More Equipment

Honda also installs an auto-dimming rearview mirror and improved adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and the collision-mitigation braking system. For the first time, it now has post-collision braking. Speaking of tech, it also has built-in Google, complete with Google Maps and Google Play. These changes make the CTR more civilized when you want to drive it like a regular Civic without taking the fun out of the Type R.

The updated 2027 Civic Type R starts at $49,990, with destination and handling fees included. That’s up $1,300 from the previous model year, but you do get more standard kit and hardware upgrades. Honda will have its revised Volkswagen Golf GTI/R rival at dealers later this month.

The Civic Type R Is Dead In Europe

Meanwhile, the CTR’s European farewell came down to regulations. Honda previously acknowledged that it was discontinuing the performance hatchback because its lineup had to “evolve” to comply with stricter legislation. The irony is hard to miss: the same car that is getting upgrades in America is disappearing from Europe because its emissions can’t keep up with the rulebook.

Cars like the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ have also fallen victim to tougher European regulations, while the Mazda MX-5 Miata lost its 2.0-liter engine for much the same reason. These are truly dark times for European enthusiasts, as increasingly strict rules continue to squeeze the fun out of affordable performance cars.

Honda Is Working On A Hardcore Edition

Rubbing salt into the wounds of European enthusiasts such as yours truly, Honda is already hinting at a hotter version. The HRC Concept is allegedly going into production with a meaner look and a wide array of mechanical tweaks. It will certainly command a premium that buyers will gladly pay for what will likely be the ultimate version of the FL5 generation.

Between the updates introduced for 2027 and the promise of a hardcore version tuned by Honda Racing, this suggests the Civic Type R still has a couple of years of shelf life left. The same goes for the hotter Golf versions, as VW has pledged to keep them alive for the long haul.
