People living near a Nottinghamshire bypass say it has been a 'nightmare' in recent months due to car meets which police say have reportedly attracted more than 100 vehicles. The Sherwood Police team say it has been receiving reports for the last six weeks about people using the A617 Rainworth Bypass as a "racetrack".
Officers say the meets, which usually take place on a Sunday evening, have made it a struggle for other road users to drive down the bypass. Complaints from residents have included the noise of the vehicles, the number of cars and people and the dangerous driving.
The A617 bypass, with a speed limit of 70mph, is a dual carriageway which provides a major route for people heading into Mansfield. Some of the more recently built developments in Rainworth back right onto the bypass, including The Fields.

One of those living there is a 28-year-old, who said: "We've been here for a year and I'd say that these meets have been happening for about three or four months, but it has got worse in the last six weeks.
"Luckily we've not got kids because it does get quite loud, especially further down the dual carriageway. I've never been driving on the road when these meets have happened, because they're always quite late at about 9 or 10pm."
One 30-year-old resident of The Fields, who did not want to be named but who has lived there for the last five years, said: "It has been a nightmare and they have been really loud.
"We're a little bit further back from the bypass, the houses backing right on to it have been bearing the brunt of this. We can still here it though when we're in the house, because they're all in these really souped-up cars."
Another resident of The Fields said the car meets in recent weeks had in fact been "exciting", saying that she had been going in the lay-bys along the road to watch. But another resident, who has lived in the development for six years, said: "It's a busy bypass but it does generally get quieter in the evening, so we have noticed these car meets.
"I didn't know how many were involved but 100 cars wouldn't surprise me. It has been quite loud and hopefully the police action will stop it."
Sherwood Police's post on Sunday (April 16), said it had received reports of a car meet on the previous evening. The post read: "We had reports of a car meet, police attended and managed to get several vehicle registrations and the owners of these vehicles will be receiving a letter in the post about their behaviour. So as a warning to anyone thinking about coming to the area... the police will be there patrolling the stretch of road, should anyone turn up, then we will be taking action against the drivers."
