Holy smokes! Marvel drops new trailer for upcoming show Ms. Marvel

It’s no secret that Marvel has a great list of films and TV shows heading to our screens in the next few days – and now fans can get excited about one more.

Today, Disney+ dropped its first trailer and poster for its upcoming TV series Ms. Marvel, featuring Marvel’s first Muslim superheroine, Kamala Khan.

Portrayed by newcomer Iman Vellani, Ms Marvel follows Kamala, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City, as she attempts to navigate adolescence, family and school life.

As an avid gamer and writer, Kamala dreams of being a superhero in her own right, especially one like Captain Marvel, whom she loves. When Kamala gets superpowers of her own, she feels that she can finally step into the spotlight for once – but of course, life is rarely that simple.

The trailer, which gives fans a glimpse of Ms. Marvel’s famous costume, leans heavily on animation and comic-book style art to illustrate Kamala’s vivid imagination and love for daydreaming.

Though it doesn’t introduce any upcoming villains, the trailer also paints Kamala’s bullies as the real big bads – and shows her struggling to cope with homework, when all she can think about is her high-school crush.

“It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world,” Kamala says in the clip, before she mysteriously gains “cosmic” superpowers.

The show is based on the original Marvel comics by G. Willow Wilson, which began in 2013 and made history by putting a Muslim superhero front and centre, with her own comic series.

It’s also clear that Marvel has big plans for Kamala Khan; after making her debut this June, she’ll be appearing in The Marvels, where she’ll finally get to meet her idol Captain Marvel and will star alongside Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris – who gained her own powers during previous Marvel TV series WandaVision.

However, that’s not due to land in cinemas until 2023, leaving plenty of time for Kamala to establish her very own superhero backstory.

Alongside Vellani, the cast will include Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah and Zenobia Shroff, and will be dropping on Disney+ on June 8.
