Holly Willoughby has said she ‘doesn’t believe’ a claim made by Meghan Markle in relation to how formal the Royal Family is behind closed doors.
The This Morning host defended Kate Middleton during a discussion about Meghan and Prince Harry ’s new Netflix documentary series on Friday morning.
In the second episode of the new Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan, Meghan recalled when she met Prince William and Kate for the first time with Prince Harry for dinner.
Speaking to the Netflix cameras, she said: “Even when Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.
“I've always been a hugger. I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits. I guess I started to understand really quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.”
Yet, Holly said it was the only part of the docu-series she took issue with, when she spoke with co-host Phillip Schofield and guests Carol Vorderman and Gyles Brandreth on the ITV programme.
Holly pointed to Kate’s ‘warm’ and ‘hands on’ manner with her children as proof she did not believe that to be the case.
She said: “This is the only bit of the whole documentary where I went, ‘Don’t do that’.
“I just thought by suggesting somebody is cold is a really horrible thing to brush off.”
She added of Kate: “We don’t know her, but from what we see of her and the way she is with her own children, I think you get a pretty good idea.”
Carol said that the Harry and Meghan series was ‘made for an American audience’, which impacted the ‘language used’.
“It was very much like Notting Hill and everyone speaks like Hugh Grant, acts like Hugh Grant. It was extended, this formality, [Meghan] said ‘a lot of British people are like this’,” she continued.
“Well, love, if you go and mix with that kind of person, that’s fine, but if you go up to Manchester and that, everyone’s hugging like crazy.”
Holly then replied saying: “I think suggesting that anyone within the Royal Family isn’t a hugger – I don’t believe that.
“We saw in the footage Prince Charles talking to the kids, being normal. Just because you’re posh doesn’t mean you can’t hug someone. It’s crazy.”
The series is being released in two sections of three episodes, with three having dropped on December 8 at 8am, with the following three arriving on December 15.
