Hogwarts Legacy: How to pick locks with Alohomora

Lockpicking is an essential skill in Hogwarts Legacy, as some of the best rewards are hidden behind locked doors. If you want to get into forbidden areas you will need to both learn the Alohomora spell, and master the lockpicking minigame. If you want to upgrade your lockpicking skills you should make sure you keep an eye out for Demiguise Moons.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to pick locks in Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy: Learning Alohomora

At some point during the main story, you will be approached by Gladwin Moon, who is the groundskeeper at Hogwarts. He’s scared of the Demiguise statues, and wants you to collect all the moons. He will teach you the Alohomora lockpicking spell to start you out on your journey.

Demiguise moons can only be collected at night, and the more you bring back to him the stronger he will make your spell. However, you can start picking locks straight away with even the basic spell.

Hogwarts Legacy: How to lockpick

Once you cast Alohomora you will begin the lockpicking minigame. To pick a lock you need to use both thumbsticks simultaneously. The right thumbstick controls the green spark, and the outer wheel of the team. The left thumbstick controls the red spark, and the gears inner wheel.

The gears can be held in the eight compass directions, and when done so the gears in the lock will begin to spin. To unpick each lock, you need to find the correct direction for both gears, and hold it for a few seconds.

The easiest way to figure this out is by trying each direction and seeing which ones make the gears twitch. This indicated that the gear is now in the right position. Once you find the correct position for both doors then it’s done.
