Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie to reunite on Today desk a year after show shake-up

Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie are reuniting on the Today desk for the first time in over a year.

Guthrie, 54, announced on-air April 9 that Kotb, 61, will fill in for co-anchor Craig Melvin as he takes time away from NBC’s morning show starting April 13.

“Speaking of tomorrow, Craig you are heading off on a very well-deserved vacation, you’ve been holding it down here for a long time,” Guthrie said on the show. “So you're going to have a spring break. And Monday we're gonna try a new host here. Her name is Hoda.”

“Oh, I’ve heard of her,” Melvin said. He then joked that he would refuse to turn on the show while he is on break.

"You're not supposed to watch on your vacation,” Guthrie responded.

It will mark the first time that Guthrie and Kotb will serve as co-anchors since Kotb’s last day in January 2025.

The pair co-hosted the morning show for seven years until Kotb announced in September 2024 that she would step down to spend more time with her daughters after 26 years with NBC. It was revealed shortly after that Melvin, who hosted the show’s third hour, would replace Kotb in co-anchoring Today upon her exit.

The reunion comes after Kotb filled in for Guthrie for nearly two months after her mom, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her Arizona home February 1. Her disappearance sparked a grueling ongoing search that has lasted over 10 weeks. Police believe Nancy, 84, was abducted from her home in the middle of the night.

No suspects have been identified in the case.

Last month, Guthrie told Kotb the search has been “agonizing” for her family in an emotional sit-down interview.

Someone needs to do the right thing,” she said through tears. “We are in agony. It is unbearable. And to think of what she went through.”

The conversation with Kotb, which aired March 26 and 27, was the first interview Guthrie gave since her mother’s disappearance. She said about returning to work: “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not.

“But I can’t not come back because it’s my family,” Guthrie explained. “I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer. And being there is joyful. And when it’s not, I’ll say so.”

On April 6, Guthrie returned to anchor the show again, more than two months after her mother’s disappearance. She gave a subtle nod to her family by wearing yellow, which has become a symbol of hope throughout the search for Nancy.

She said during her first show back that it felt “good to be home.” Sitting next to Melvin, she said, “Well here we go, ready or not, let’s do the news.”

During the broadcast, she told fans on Rockefeller plaza: “You guys have been so beautiful. I’ve received so many letters, so much kindness to me and my whole family. We feel it. We feel your prayers, so thank you so much.”
