Hockey World Cup: India suffer shock exit from WC, lose to New Zealand in sudden death

BHUBANESWAR: Eight seconds separated India from qualifying for the quarterfinals of the FIH World Cup here on Sunday night. The Kalinga stadium reverberated with prayers of over 16,000 people, some silent and many vocal. Shamsher Singh’s sudden death charge against New Zealand goalkeeper Leon Hayward was first wasted, then retaken but that failed to change the fortunes for India. Harmanpreet Singh and his men needed more than prayers and ‘hockey lucky’ on the day.

The result: They failed to qualify for the quarterfinals against Belgium, with New Zealand going through with a 5-4 victory in shootouts.
