Hit Liverpool restaurant popular with Jay Rayner set to open branch in Manchester

Maray, which has three restaurants in Liverpool, is set to open a fourth site in Manchester, it’s been confirmed.

The restaurant, which embraces Middle Eastern flavours and is inspired by the hip Marais neighbourhood in Paris, will open on Brazennose Street off Albert Square, in Bruntwood Works’ Union building.

The restaurant will be the biggest so far, and will feature a wrap-around outdoor terrace.

Managing Director, James Bates, said: “Opening a restaurant in Manchester has long been an ambition of ours and we have combed the four corners of the city to find somewhere we felt was just right.

“We’re so excited to get going at Union, we love the area and feel like we’re going to be right in the middle of it all, in a city with a huge reputation for loving restaurants, nights out and a good drink.”

The first Maray restaurant opened in Bold Street in Liverpool in 2014, followed by two more, one on the Albert Dock and another on Allerton Road.

Reviews in the national press followed, including a rave notice from The Observer’s Jay Rayner.

The famous 'disco cauliflower' (The Maray)

Dishes such as the now famous ‘disco cauliflower’, a roasted head of cauliflower with chermoula, harissa, tahini, and yoghurt, and sprinkled with pomegranate, almonds and fresh herbs, have become a signature.

It’s also known for its buttermilk chicken, and its extensive vegetarian and vegan dishes, including cannellini beans, sweet potato with tahini and date molasses, and spiced lentil & rice mejadara.

Also hot on its cocktails, it has minted the Agent Cooper, its take on the espresso martini.

The new site will open in the summer.
