The Black Friar in Salford is celebrating its first birthday with a host of £1 offers all through the month of August. The pub reopened its doors last summer, after a huge refurbishment, costing over £1.5 million.
Chef Ben Chaplin, formerly of 20 Stories, took on the kitchen a year ago and has transformed the menu, while the expanded outside space has made it a city hot spot, just over the Irwell.
Neil Burke, managing director of the venue, said: “We’re so excited to be celebrating our first birthday and want all of our friends, neighbours and loyal guests to come and celebrate with us. At the Black Friar, our main focus (other than top quality drinks and grub) is to give back to our local community. We hope that by offering some of our most popular menu items for just £1 that our guests will feel the love.”

The first offer runs from August 2 to 5, where the bar will be doing glasses of prosecco for just £1. The next will be August 9 to 12, where the food menu’s bread and olives will be £1.
Then from August 16 to 19, its own Black Friar Lager will be £1 a pint, as will Orchard Pig cider. Then finally, from August 23 to 26, all sides on the a la carte menu will be just £1.
The grade II listed pub dates back over 200 years, and was originally known as the School Inn, but burned down. It was renamed the Black Friar when it was rebuilt in 1886. It was open continuously from then until 2001, when it burned down a second time.
Developers Salboy and Domis then rescued the building and, after an extensive refurb including a huge new beer garden, opened it again last year. Earlier this summer, it unveiled a new garden bar as well as an outdoor kitchen.
