Historic clock from lost Edinburgh pub up for auction after being rescued from skip

An iconic piece of Edinburgh pub history is to raise money for charity after being rescued from a skip.

The clock from well-known lost boozer the Auld Toll bar in Tollcross was recently handed in to grateful staff at the Birthlink Thrift Shop by an anonymous individual.

Staff at the Lochrin Buildings charity shop were chuffed to bits at receiving the timepiece and are now planning to auction it for charity.

A fixture in the area for decades, Leven Street's Auld Toll bar was a traditional pub with a loyal clientele, but closed in 2011. It underwent a major refit the following year and was reborn in a more modern style as the Blackbird.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Birthlink Thrift Shop manager, Neil Gascoyne, said the iconic item will be sold in a sealed auction and that he hopes it goes to a local bidder - preferably a former regular at the Auld Toll.

"A couple of weeks ago, this person came in and donated the clock.

"They said it was the clock from the Auld Toll and that if we thought we could sell it - 'there's absolutely no way we wouldn't take that', we replied. It's just amazing."

Made from Bakelite plastic, the clock bears the name of the Auld Toll on its face and still has the remains of the cabling that powered it visible to the rear.

It's condition is described as good, with a couple of small chips and scratches.

Neil Gascoyne said he was stunned to learn that the clock had been salvaged from a skip, but is glad it will soon be going to a good home.

Neil said: "The woman who donated it said it had been rescued by their brother from a skip. I presume he used to drink there.

"It's still got the mains cable so would've been hard-wired in. I think they had planned to adapt it so that it works on batteries, but never got round to it."

"It's not an item that's particularly valuable, but it will definitely mean something to someone who used to drink there. The dream is that it goes to someone who is local or even frequented the Auld Toll.

"Unfortunately, the Auld Toll was slightly before my time, as I only came to Edinburgh about 10 years ago, but from what I hear it sounds like it was a really good pub."

The Birthlink Thrift Shop say they have received numerous offers for the Auld Toll clock already. Their sealed auction will run until March 16 when the item will go to the highest bidder.
