His feisty and defiant sense of humour remains: Salman Rushdie's son Zafar Rushdie on his father's health

An on-stage attack on former Booker Prize-winner Salman Rushdie during an event in upstate New York on August 12, 2022, sent shockwaves in the literary world. Rushdie was stabbed 15 times and was airlifted to a hospital where he was on ventilator support for a day. Now, roughly two days since the attack his family has issued an official statement giving his health update.

"Following the attack on Friday, my father remains in critical condition in hospital receiving intensive ongoing medical treatment. We are extremely relieved that yesterday he was taken off the ventilator and additional oxygen and he was able to say a few words," Rushdie's son Zafar Rushdie said on social media.
