Hippos and elephants once roamed the streets of Leeds - and could come back

A story that's certainly one for your next trivia night - there is evidence of hippos and elephants walking the streets of Leeds, years ago.

When workmen were digging through clay in a brickfield in 1851, they had no idea what they were about to discover. Nor did they have any idea that, 150 years later, evidence of perhaps the oddest story to come out of Leeds would still be on show in a museum.

When the workers uncovered the bones in the Armley Gyratory area, they instantly knew they weren't human because of the sheer size of them. Not sure on what to do, or what exactly they were, they took them to Henry Denny, who was the curator at the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society Museum.
