A fault in a high voltage cable has caused a power cut in Tameside, leaving over 1,200 homes without power.
Electricity North West was alerted to a power cut in the Hollingworth area of Hyde shortly before 3pm this afternoon, with the energy company confirming the blackout has been caused by an "unexpected incident on the high voltage cable". Engineers are on route to the site of the power cut, which is currently affecting 1,245 customers, and are hoping to restore electricity by 6pm this evening.
A number of postcodes in the area have been affected, predominantly in the SK14 area, although some SK13 postcodes have also had their supply temporarily interrupted. A full list of postcodes affected, and up-to-date information about when the power might be restored and how engineers are getting on at the site, is available on the incident page.
A statement from Electricity North West said: "This power cut has been caused by an unexpected incident on the high voltage cable that provides electricity to your home or business. We didn't know before your electricity went off that this was going to happen but now we know, rest assured we will get your power back on safely and as quickly as possible.
"Please be aware that all our time scales are estimated based on previous experience and may change if new information becomes available while our engineers are fixing the issue. With high voltage power cut’s, we're often able to get many of the homes involved back on before our estimated time of restoration."
During a power cut, the company recommends leaving fridges and freezers closed to keep contents cool, layering up to keep warm in buildings with electric heating, and unplugging any electrical appliances that need to be attended whilst running, such as grills, hair straighteners, and electric fires. Anyone who needs urgent help during the power cut can call 105 to get emergency help and advice during a blackout.
