Squanch Games has announced the resignation of Justin Roiland on the same day he was dropped by entertainment company Adult Swim.

Roiland, 42, appeared in court on January 12 for a pre-trial hearing. He has been charged with two allegations of domestic battery with corporal injury and false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit, to which he has pled not guilty.

A trial date has not yet been set. However, on January 25 the game studio he helped to co-found, Squanch Games, announced that Roiland was no longer its CEO.

“On January 16, 2023, Squanch Games received Justin Roiland’s resignation,” the company said on Twitter on January 25.

“The passionate team at Squanch will keep developing games we know our fans will love while continuing to support and improve High on Life.”

Squanch Games was co-founded by Roiland in 2016 and has released three titles. These include High on Life, a science-fiction shooter featuring sentient guns, for which Roiland provided voice acting (and which we reviewed here).

High on Life became one of the Xbox GamePass’s most popular games when it launched in December. Despite a lacklustre critical response, it quickly became the platform’s biggest 2022 launch. It was also the biggest launch ever for a single-player game.

Of its decision to part ways with Roiland on January 25, Adult Swim said: “Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland.

Rick and Morty will continue. The talented and dedicated crew are hard at work on season seven.”

Alongside Dan Harmon, Roiland is best known for creating and starring in the sitcom Rick and Morty, which started in 2013 and finished its sixth season last month. In 2018 and 2020, the show won an Emmy Award for best animated programme.

Roiland provides the voices for both the main characters, inventor Rick Sanchez and his teenage grandson Morty Smith.

However, it appears as though Rick and Morty is set to continue without him. No word has been given on what form the show will take going forward beyond the company’s official statement. However, the roles of Rick and Morty will reportedly be recast.

In addition to Adult Swim and Squanch Games, Roiland is also involved with the Hulu series Solar Opposites, which he helped to create. However, there has not yet been any news on his involvement with the show in the future.
