The High Level Bridge over the River Tyne was closed for several hours after concern was raised for a woman on the bridge.
Just before 3pm on Monday afternoon, officers responded to a report of concern for the woman and the bridge was subsequently closed to buses and taxis.
Go North East buses running towards Gateshead were unable to stop on Wellington Street as a result.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 2.45pm today (Monday), we received a report of concern for a woman on the High Level Bridge. Officers and emergency crews remain at the scene.”
At 3.22pm, Go North East tweeted: "Due to an incident at High level Bridge our services operating towards Gateshead are currently unable to service stops at Wellington Street Gateshead, please catch your bus from Gateshead Interchange."
The bridge was closed for around four hours and was believed to have reopened shortly before 7pm.
