Brandon Starc has withdrawn from the Australian team for the world athletics championships, choosing to prioritise his bid for a second straight Commonwealth Games high jump title.

Starc has battled a foot injury this year which has hampered his build-up to the world titles beginning in Eugene on Friday (Saturday AEST).

With the qualifying round of the men's high jump scheduled for day one of the world championships, Starc made the tough call to focus on the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

"I am extremely disappointed not to be competing in Oregon this weekend," said Starc, who was fifth at last year's Tokyo Olympics.

"The world athletics championships is one of the most exciting competitions we have as track and field athletes, and when going into these competitions, I always strive to be in peak shape.

"While I have been progressing in my preparations, I have chosen to give myself every opportunity possible to defend my gold medal in Birmingham in front of my family and friends."

Joel Baden and Yual Reath will now be left to fly the Australian flag in the men's high jump in Eugene.

The qualifying round of the high jump at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is on August 2.
