Hidden washing machine filter needs cleaning four times a year - but most don't know

Washing machines clean your clothes - but how often do you actually clean your washing machine? One home expert has demonstrated how to clean a hidden part of your washing machine, in order to prolong its lifespan so you don't have to replace it as regularly - it's a win-win situation.

Instagram user Babs aka @brunchwithbabs revealed that there is a part of your washing machine you may forget about, but it needs cleaning at least four times a year - the filter. She challenged people to open up their washing machine to prove that it's sometimes tough to locate them.

The cleaning guru then gave a demonstration of how to remove the filter and clean it thoroughly - she uses a towel and a bowl to catch the excess water as she prepares to pull the filter out.

She describes the water as 'stinky winky' as the filter comes out looking disgusting - she then finds a rogue sock stuck behind the filter.

Babs then sprays white vinegar on her cloth and used it to tackle the grime on the machine.

She explained: "Just wipe out the filter compartment. Just because it’s pretty bad. So after it’s dry, just take your filter and give it a nice twist to make sure it’s in tightly."

This process needs to be repeated four times a year, and Babs explained that it may be gross, but it doesn't take long, and will prolong the life of the washing machine.

Instagram users were shocked at the tip, with some saying they didn't even know the filter needed cleaning.

One wrote: "WHAT???!!! I’m today years old and just learning this!!! Wow!!"

Another gave some more advice, writing: "The first time I cleaned it I thought I tightened it shut as hard as I could but about an hour later I hear the most bizarre sound coming from downstairs. It’s the sound of water hitting my kitchen island from the ceiling.

"I had water pouring down from the washer on the second floor. It flooded my laundry room and caused a ton of damage to my kitchen underneath. Worst feeling ever! Learn from me folks, tighten that filter shut, and then stare at it to make sure it’s closed!"

Someone else joked: "I’ve just changed my washing machine. I dread to think what my plumber found when he was removing the old one. Probably all the underwire I’ve lost!"
