Hibs new boy David Marshall's Scotland retirement came as 'little surprise' says Steve Clarke

Steve Clarke has admitted David Marshall's decision to hang up his gloves for Scotland came as a bit of a surprise.

The 37-year-old has just put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Hibs for the start of next season.

The ex-Celtic keeper won 47 caps for his country and provided the Tartan Army with a moment they will never forget after saving a penalty in the shootout from Aleksandar Mitrović in Serbia to secure a spot at Euro 2020.

Following Scotland's World Cup play-off defeat to Ukraine, Marshall decided to call time on his international career to allow the likes of Zander Clark and Liam Kelly to flourish in supporting Hearts and Dark Blues No1 Craig Gordon.

Clarke admits he didn't see the decision coming but has revealed the duo had a good chat and that he thanked him for everything he has done for the national team.

Asked if it came as a surprise he responded: "It was a little bit of a surprise.

"Certainly the timing. Listen, I had a good chat with David and his mind was made up.

"We shook hands, I thanked him for everything that he'd done for the national team and wished him well for the rest of his club career.

"I've no idea (if he'd come back in case of emergency)."

Marshall's full focus will now be on club football with Hibs after agreeing to join Lee Johnson's Easter Road summer rebuild.
