Hibs new boy David Marshall reveals Rangers veteran Allan McGregor messaged him after Scotland call

David Marshall has revealed Rangers veteran Allan McGregor sent him a text message following his decision to bring an end to his Scotland career.

The former Celtic goalkeeper has joined Lee Johnson's Hibs this summer as part of the Easter Road rebuild and has decided to concentrate on club matters after informing Steve Clarke of his decision to retire from the national team.

The 37-year-old leaves the national pool with fond memories of his own and delivering one of the finest moments the Tartan Army have experienced in a long, long time after he denied Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrović from 12-yards in the play-off final shootout to earn the Dark Blues a spot at the Euro 2020 finals - and bring an end to many years of major tournament football hurt. Revealing what McGregor, 40, said to him after hanging up his gloves for Scotland, he told the Scottish Sun : “Greegsy doesn’t give you much but he texted when I retired from Scotland.

“He’s a man of few words, apart from on the pitch when he’s shouting at referees.

“So it was nice to get a lovely text and I’m looking forward to seeing him.

“He and Craig have a couple of years on me. It must have been hard for Allan when everyone was saying he was probably going to retire after the Europa League final.

“It’s good to see he’s signed another year.

“Craig was the top keeper last year. I’m looking forward to facing him and Hearts is our second game in the league.

“From the outside, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen should always try to be the third best team in the country.

“I think that’s realistic. You could add a few more but the expectation for the fans, the club and the budget lends itself to those teams who should be aiming for that.”

Marshall has been part of the Hibs group out in Portugal at a warm-weather training camp as the team build-up fitness and continue to bond as a unit.

The Leith outfit return to competitive action on Saturday in the Premier Sports Cup when Clyde visit Easter Road.

Falkirk, Bonnyrigg Rose and Greenock Morton make up the rest of the Hibees' section.

Matters than turn to the Premiership on July 30 with an opening day trip to St Johnstone.
