Hey Duggee is the greatest show ever and here are 12 of the best moments

This year CBeebies is celebrating its 20th anniversary and it's safe to say the channel has been a godsend for many a parent!

But not all of the shows can 'just' be enjoyed by children and there's one that sticky, sticky, sticks out from the crowd - Hey Duggee.

The show is supposed to be aimed at two- to five-year-olds but who are they kidding? It's a modern masterpiece up there with The Wire as one of the greatest shows ever to grace our TV screens.

Genius pop culture references are mixed with sly humour so that all ages can revel in the tales of The Squirrel Club, an activity club led by Duggee himself for Betty, Norrie, Roly, Tag and Happy.

So far there have been three series and an amazing 156 episodes. Here are just some of the best moments...

Strange fruit

In The Food Growing Badge, Happy spends ages talking to his seed and nurturing it, but then all the other squirrels' plants grow and his doesn't. He's very sad but then it suddenly bursts into the biggest strawberry you've ever seen. Hoorah!

Stephen!

Betty shows the other squirrels her comic, which is all about Power Puppy – ordinary dog by day, but by night, a fearless crime-fighter with superpowers! They then decide to dress up as superheroes themselves to become the Squirrel Squad. Their superhero names are: Brilliant Girl, SuperTag, Megamouse, Splash and... Stephen. God bless Roly!

'I'm going to work in the city!'

Duggee builds a rock pool in The Tadpole Badge, but the squirrels are a little confused why the tadpoles don't look like frogs. Despite their misgivings, the tadpoles turn into frogs and leave the pool, with Betty getting a bit weepy because they have grown up fast. While one of the young frogs says big business is for him, another tells us 'I'm going to go on a gap yah'.

Norrie is ill

The soothing tones of Alexander Armstrong start the episode in the usual manner, before he breaks off and says 'oh no, are you ill?' because she's in bed. All the rest of the squirrels then embark on an adventure to give her a get well soon card.

'You chose wisely...'

One of the many film homages, Hey Duggee goes full-on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in The Shape Badge episode. Roly has to figure out which hole to put the ladybird in before a storm hits. Tense and dramatic. It's amazing.

'Don't do it Maverick, it's too risky'

In The Honey Badge, a crack squadron of honey bees are attempting to deliver nectar to the hive but find their runway blocked by toys. Despite Captain Bumble's warning, maverick flyer, err, Maverick (complete with US twang) tries anyway. He almost makes it. But doesn't.

Code Blue

Duggee shows the Squirrels his private cheese vault, where some of the rarest and smelliest cheeses on Earth are kept, but the smelliest one - the Barkminster Blue - makes its way into the outside world and it's up to the team to track it down in a genius Stranger Things parody. Among the cheeses in Duggee’s vault are the Lesser Spotted Devonshire Dingle and a Peppery Pickled Pecorino from Peru.

Spanish chicken

When over-enthusiastic Happy breaks some eggs earmarked for a nice omelette, the Squirrels pay the chickens a visit but find them glued to a Spanish-language hospital soap opera and eating junk food. Turns out they're too unhealthy to lay more eggs, so Hennie the Ostrich is called to whip them into shape.

Tag's mum takes a shine to Duggee

Duggee hires a big yellow bus and takes the Squirrels and their parents (and in some cases, grandparents) to… where exactly? Well it’s a surprise! In The Big Day Out Badge, Tag's mum makes it clear she likes Duggee's bus driver outfit, with the big dog getting a quite flustered by quite a few of her comments! Oh, and The Loch Ness Monster who lives under Bagpipe Bridge sounds quite a lot like Sean Connery.

'Ha ha, ho ho, uh oh!'

The Squirrels are digging in the garden when someone finds treasure. Confused, Roly questions Duggee on what it might be. This leads Duggee to deliver a quirky history lesson featuring multi-coloured dinosaurs and giant cats - and a little doomed creature who loves to be beside the seaside. We also get to see Duggee in a Flintstones-style outift.

Sticky, sticky, stick, stick

The most famous Hey Duggee song. The Stick Song is a great way to get yourself pumped up before a night out... as is its football cousin - The Kick Song. The original has been played millions of time online, while many remixes have been produced, by both the BBC and others, including a heavy metal remix by children's heavy metal band Slay Duggee.

Top of the pups

A Duggee spin-off that does feature in the main show, too. The potty song is a masterpiece.

And don't forget the supporting cast...

There are lots of regular characters who are all stars in their own right. There's Hennie, Choo Choo the panda, Buggee, John and Nigel (aka Mr and Mr Crab), Tino the artistic mouse, King Tiger, Dugglee, the mice gang (let's bounce!), Lord Fingal and last, but very much not least, Enid the cat.
