Amid the frustration and fraying tempers at London’s airports this week, one passenger emerged as an unlikely “hero” after stepping in to help amid the chaos caused by an air traffic control technical glitch.

Kurtis Toy, 36, took matters into his own hands after his flight to Aberdeen from Gatwick airport was cancelled on Tuesday, having already spent four hours on board without any food.
