Lifeboat crews were called to an emergency in East Lothian on Monday lunchtime.
North Berwick Volunteer crews were paged at 12.44pm on Saturday as kayakers were plunged into the chilly waters after their boats capsized.
One of the kayakers' boat tipped over and he struggled to get back into it due to the temperature of the water. While trying to help his friend, the other kayaker was thrown into the water when his boat capsized too. Using a hand-held VHF radio they were able to issue a Pan Pan emergency.

Pan Pan calls are used for urgent situations that are not life threatening. Both are treated with an urgent response from the coastguard.
At 12.44pm, The North Berwick volunteer lifeboat was launched with newly qualified Callum MacLeod as Helm. He launched with two other crew members and commenced a search for the kayakers at the last reported location.
The pair made their way back to shore but experienced issues with their hand held radio. They then attended at the lifeboat station where they were checked out by other volunteer crew who had also responded to the pager. They were treated for cold and were assisted with their kayaks and equipment.
Callum Macleod (Helm) said “Even well equipped water users can get into difficulty and we would encourage the use of the PLB's as this gives the coastguard an exact position to pass to the lifeboat crew allowing us to attend in the correct area very quickly.”
