Here’s what Devin McCourty reportedly said on Jack Jones

With some character questions being thrown around surrounding New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones, retired safety Devin McCourty, Jones’ former teammate, brought some perspective when texting NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran.

Jones posted $30,000 bail on Tuesday during his arraignment on gun-related charges. McCourty reportedly noted the second-year cornerback’s tough upbringing, but he also made it clear that he was a “good kid.”

“I texted a little bit with Devin McCourty yesterday, and he simply said, ‘[Jack Jones] is a good kid,” Curran said, when appearing on Gresh & Fauria. “He just had a tough upbringing, and sometimes it’s hard for guys to shake loose from the way things that they have seen growing up.’ But he did pledge, ‘This is a good kid.’ He didn’t just say, ‘Oh, it was a matter of time.’ I don’t want to speak out of turn on Devin’s behalf, and I hope I wasn’t betraying anything regarding him, but he said, ‘He’s a good kid.'”

Jones pleaded not guilty after being arrested last Friday at a security checkpoint at Logan International Airport for allegedly attempting to board a flight with firearms.

He is facing two counts on each of the following charges: possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport; possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card; unlawful possession of a firearm; carrying a loaded firearm; and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

A conviction could lead to jail time for the 25-year-old defensive back.
