I don’t mean to alarm you, dear reader, but it appears a major cast member will no longer be featuring in Bridgerton Season Three alongside Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). I am donning my finest Lady Whistledown feathered headpiece to share everything we know about the season with you purveyors of fine gossip.
Who will Bridgerton Season 3 be about?
As we already know, Bridgerton Season Three will focus on the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, so we know Luke Newtown and Nicola Coughlan will soon be on our screens. Lady Whistledown redemption arc, let’s go!
The first photos of the fetching couple dropped at Netflix’s global fan event, Tudum, in June 2023. Penelope looked simply divine with her cascading Hollywood siren curls and beautifully embroidered gown. Colin also looked rather scrumptious and debonair, but I’m more of a Benedict (Luke Thompson) girl myself.
When asked on the Tudum red carpet what we can expect to see from Penelope Featherington in Season Three, Coughlan said she “grows up a lot”.
“She becomes a woman. She has to step into her light and it’s difficult, it’s not so easy doing that.
“Colin Bridgerton is grown up, as well. I think we see them in a way we’ve never ever seen them before. So I’m very excited to share that with the fans.”
A woman? Stepping into her light? In a way we’ve never seen before? I demand it right this second.
Season Three is sure to be sensationally scandalous, if the Season Two finale was anything to go by. To jog thine memories, Penelope overheard Colin telling some chaps that he wouldn’t dare think of courting her. Then the chamberpot hit the fan when Penelope’s best friend Eloise (Claudia Jessie) discovered she was, in fact, Lady Whistledown.
But our Penelope is a fighter, she is. During last year’s Tudum, Coughlan read out the first page of the Bridgerton Season Three script, which is a very iconic narration from Lady Whistledown.
“Dearest gentle reader, we have been apart for far too long. At last, London’s smart set has made its return,” she said.
“And so too has this author. As the season begins, the question on everyone’s mind is, of course, which newly minted debutante will shine the brightest?”
We cannot wait to find out which young lass will paint the ‘Ton red.
When is the Bridgerton Season 3 release date?
The release date for Bridgerton Season Three is yet to be confirmed, and there’s been a few delays since filming commenced in 2022 and finished up earlier this year. Initially, reports suggested the show would air in late 2023, but that clearly hasn’t happened. The WGA-SAG strike also may have also led to a delay of the release.
Adjoa Andoh (who plays Lady Danbury) said the season will air in 2024.
“It’s very gratifying because we’ve held our breath for a long time,” she told Hello! magazine.
“Because of the way the year’s panned out and that the season’s going to come out next year, the anticipation is going to grow and grow.”
Will Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington have sex scenes in Bridgerton Season 3?
Oh yes, dear reader. In fact, Nicola Coughlan told Entertainment Tonight that fans can expect one thing in Season Three: “mirror”.
For those of you who don’t know the horny significance of that word, in the Bridgerton books, Colin tells Penelope he wants to get naughty with her … in front of a mirror. Oh lord.
It’s not only a great scene because it’s hot as fuck but it’s also romantic because he’s obsessed with her. Give it to us!!! We need it!!!
What is Bridgerton about?
The Bridgerton TV series is based on a book series by the same name. It’s written by Julia Quinn and each book focuses on a seperate Bridgerton sibling.
The age order of the siblings is Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), Benedict (Luke Thompson), Colin (Luke Newton), Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Francesca (Ruby Stokes in Seasons One and Two, Hannah Dodd in Season Three), Gregory (Will Tilston) and Hyacinth (Florence Hunt).
Thank goodness they went for the alphabetical names. But the books don’t focus on each sibling chronologically by age — Daphne was the protagonist of Season One and the first book The Duke and I.
Eldest sibling Anthony was the protagonist of Bridgerton Season Two. His story takes place in the second book, The Viscount and I.
Will Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page come back to Bridgerton?
In news we probably should have seen coming, Dynevor revealed in January 2023 that Daphne Bridgerton has left the ton.
When asked if she would be returning to the show, Dynevor told Screen Rant: “Sadly not in season three. Potentially in the future. But season three I’m just excited to watch as a viewer.”
In a separate interview with Variety, she said she’d gotten what she wanted out of the show and her storyline was pretty much complete.
“Well, I did my two seasons,” she said.
“I’ve done what I wanted to do with that character and she had a great arc. If they ask me back in the future, who knows?”
Honestly, fair. It’s time for some new blood! And Daphne isn’t my favourite character after that non-consensual scene between her and Simon (Regé-Jean Page). Given how viewers responded to it, I can’t imagine it’s a good idea to bring Daphne back in much capacity. Out with the old and in with the new, I say!
Speaking of the Duke of Hastings, there were rumours Page was indeed “in talks” to return to Bridgerton for Season Three after his dramatic exit post-Season One.
“Regé-Jean was always very open about his intention to quit the show after the first season and to move on to other projects,” a source told The Sun.
“But recently there has been a dialogue between him and the show’s bosses.
“Nothing has been formally agreed yet, but watch this space.”
My pantyhose are cautiously being peeled off as we speak, but if Daphne is out of the show, I highly doubt we’ll see anymore of Simon.
Will Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton return in Bridgerton Season 3?
Since our boyfriend Simon didn’t return to the ton, you’d be forgiven for fearing that certain Bridgerton Season Two stars wouldn’t be back again.
But there’s good news for Kanthony stans!
In July 2022, Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma) appeared on a panel with Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran (Edwina Sharma), Season One and Two showrunner Chris Van Dusen, composer Kris Bowers and costume designer Sophie Canale.
It was here that Ashley confirmed we’d be getting more Viscount and Viscountess Bridgerton. Delicious.
“Yes, there will be a post-marriage Kanthony story for sure,” she said.
Ashley also said she was “keen to just play with the Anthony and Kate story now that they’re loved up and they’ve kind of sorted themselves out”.
Phew. Honestly, I just want more backstage snaps of Ashley and Bailey being besties.
It’s also likely that Edwina Sharma will be returning. It was hinted in Season Two that she’d be set up with a prince, so hopefully that’s a spin-off we’ll see in the future.
“What I would love for Edwina most of all is adventure and excitement,” Chandran told E! News last March.
“I’m sort of, ‘enough of Edwina and boys!’ It’s about Edwina and herself.”
Much to think about. Much indeed.
There you have it: all the Bridgerton Season Three tea spilled from a delicate porcelain cup.
We’ll keep you posted with more deets when we have them. But until then, keep looking up Regency era ballgowns on Etsy.
