FORT WORTH, Texas — The Charles Schwab Challenge begins on Thursday and some of the PGA Tours’ best players will compete for a victory at the Colonial Country Club.
Here’s a look at 10 of the most noteworthy past winners of the Charles Schwab Challenge before the tournament tees off. Winners are in order of most recent win in the Fort Worth tournament:
1. Justin Rose
The former No. 1 golfer in the world put on a show at the Colonial in 2018 finishing 20-under par, which was the second-best finish in the history of the event.
Rose has had two top-10 finishes in nine appearances.
2. Jordan Spieth
The Dallas native has shined at the Colonial Country Club over his career. He’s only finished outside of the top 10 twice in 10 career appearances at the Colonial and has never missed the cut.
Spieth has been runner-up three times and won the tournament in 2016. Last year Spieth finished seventh, marking his fourth straight appearance with a top-10 finish.
3. Zach Johnson
Johnson had a four-year period from 2010-2013 where he completely dominated the Charles Schwab Challenge. In those four years, Johnson’s lowest finish was fourth place.
4. Phil Mickelson
Mickelson won at the Colonial Country Club twice over an 8-year span from 2000-2008, only 11 PGA Tour players have won the tournament more than once.
Mickelson has struggled, missing the cut in three of his last four appearances at the event.
5. Nick Price
The Hall of Fame South African golfer had five top-10 finishes in 17 years participating in the Charles Schwab Challenge, then called the Southwestern Bell Colonial and the MasterCard Colonial.
Price won the event in 1994 and 2002.
6. Tom Watson
Another all-time great and famous rival of Jack Nicklaus, Watson was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. Watson won the tournament in 1998 with a score of 15-under par.
7. Ben Crenshaw
Another multiple-time winner of the tournament, Crenshaw won in 1977 and 1990. His 12-year gap in between victories is the longest in the event’s history.
In both of Crenshaw’s victories, he finished eight-under-par.
8. Jack Nicklaus
One of the greatest golfers in the history of the PGA Tour, Nicklaus competed in the tournament when it was called the Colonial National Invitation.
Nicklaus had a top-five finish in half of his 10 appearances, including a win at the event in 1982.
9. Lee Trevino
Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981 for his legendary career, which included six major championships and 29 PGA Tour wins.
Trevino won the event twice over a three-year span that began in 1976.
10. Ben Hogan
No golfer has been more successful at the Charles Schwab Challenge than Hogan. Hogan has won the event a whopping five times, no other golfer has won the event more than twice.
Hogan won the event back-to-back in 1946-1947 and then again in 1952 and 1953. Hogan won for the last time in 1959.
