Her Seizures Were Set Off by Sermon Podcasts Read by Men, and Hospital Monitors Caught Four of Them

Her neurologists described the pattern in a case report titled "Podcast-induced reflex seizures: A unique trigger," published online May 4, 2026, in the journal Epileptic Disorders and included in its August issue. The woman reported that male narrating voices consistently set off her seizures, especially sermons led by a male pastor. To the authors' knowledge, no podcast of any kind had previously been reported as a seizure trigger.

The case is an unusual example of reflex epilepsy, a form of the disorder in which seizures reliably follow a specific stimulus. It is also a reminder that the trigger is not always a flashing light.
