A 55-year-old woman was admitted to a Portuguese hospital with a kidney infection and a blocked ureter. The infection was the reason she came in. The calcium level in her blood was the reason her case got written up.
Her corrected serum calcium came back at 14.56 mg/dL, a figure well into the range that causes confusion, kidney damage, and cardiac arrhythmias. She had none of the symptoms usually associated with it. Her kidney function was badly impaired, with a creatinine of 4.6 mg/dL.
