Hellish queues at UK airports as EasyJet, Wizz Air and BA cancel 166 flights

Passengers have arrived at UK airports to be met with hellish queues yet again, as several major airlines cancelled 166 flights.

Excited families, wedding parties and other holidaymakers were being turned away and sent home over the half-term week as last minute cancellations caused chaos across the country.

But the disappointment hasn't stopped for Brits this week - with many of those who made it away over the school holiday now stranded abroad while more hopeful travellers in the UK were pictured standing in enormous queues this morning (June 7).

It comes as major providers, EasyJet Wizz Air and British Airways cancelled another 166 flights collectively.

Families have been forced to cross borders and find alternative transport such as the Eurostar as they raced to return home for school and work.

Naomi Thomas, 33, and Danny Massey, 39, from Crewe, Cheshire, have been left trapped in Paris after their flight from Faro, Portugal to Liverpool John Lennon airport was cancelled on Saturday.

Schoolteacher, Naomi told the Mirror how they had caught the Eurostar to neighbouring France in a bid to get home in time for her daughter's school trip on Monday June 6.

She said: ""I am a teacher, my partner works in a secondary school, and my step daughter was due to leave our home for a school trip to Normandy, France at 1am on Monday. It was imperative we got back quickly. The treatment from easyJet has been non existent.

"No refreshments. No offers of accommodation. Just a printed leaflet of the emails they sent at midnight, while the instructions to manage your booking on the app still are not working almost 27 hours later. As for any phone numbers - these don’t exist during the middle of the night when you’re alone in a cold airport.

"I will certainly be refraining from using easyJet in the future and will probably stick to caravan holidays in the UK."

But the family were held up again when they learned their connecting train from Paris to London was also cancelled with the next available service on Tuesday (today).

Although the rules vary between local councils and at the discretion of headteachers - parents can be slapped with a £60 fine each for non-sickness related absences, such as being on holiday during term-time.

Two of the worst hit airports have been Manchester and Bristol, with the latter facing 16 EasyJet cancellations alone today (June 7), according to MailOnline.

The airline also axed 20 flights from Gatwick and a further seven from Luton.

Ali Haynes took to Twitter to share her frustration after her family were only told their flight was cancelled after they arrived in the departure lounge.

She wrote: "@easyJet: “get to the airport 3 hours before your flight”… Also @easyJet 2 hours before, when we’re checked in and through security with a 5 month old baby, text message: “flight cancelled”.

"We’re now stuck in Luton departures with no information on what next. Holiday ruined."

She added: "We’re so deflated and tired, we’re just going home!"

In Manchester, passengers faced monstrous queues across multiple terminals yet again, with the airport plagued by huge delays in security and baggage retrieval due to "staff shortages".

Manchester Airport bosses admitted that they had struggled with staffing levels following Covid in an open apology letter to passengers in April.

London's main airport, London Heathrow has seen 124 flights cancelled by British Airways flights, although the airline stressed that affected passengers were given plenty of advance notice with these services all axed a few months ago.

Gatwick and Stanstead have also faced huge queues and cancellations.

Diego Garcia Rodriguez, 32, a Spanish national who lives Brighton, said passengers have been left in tears at Gatwick airport due to last-minute cancellations.

He told the PA news agency: "I'm flying from Gatwick to Barcelona and I was at the airport three hours before but almost didn't make it to board.

"The flight hasn't been delayed so far but I have seen lots of people whose flights have been cancelled, some crying and stressing out and they only got the news after having gone through the security control so they didn't know how to get out.

"There was no information and it was all very chaotic."

Joss Croft, chief executive at UKinbound told TravelWeekly last month that the Queen's Platinum Jubilee had "rejuvenated" UK tourism with over 21 million international visitors expected to flock to Britain over the course of this year.

But following the royal celebrations The Financial Times reported that nearly 500 flights had been cancelled to and from the UK over the four day Bank Holiday weekend alone.
