Ten-year-old Nicholas Tadros, who was critically injured after the fatal Sea World Helicopter crash, is undergoing several surgeries.
Nicholas remains in the Queensland Children's Hospital in a critical but stable condition after a helicopter he was a passenger in collided with another mid-air, killing four people, including his mother.
While his condition remains very serious, it is unlikely to get worse and is an improvement from the critical condition he has been in since the accident on January 2.
The year five student is expected to undergo five operations over some six hours on Tuesday, a family friend posted on Facebook.
That friend said it would be a "major test" for Nicholas.
"There's been some miracles with small wins overcoming these setbacks," the friend wrote.
Nicholas was critically injured in the crash, which claimed the life of his 36-year-old mother Vanessa Tadros and three others.
He was transferred to the Queensland Children's Hospital from Gold Coast University Hospital last week.
Nicholas's family are members of St Padre Pio's Parish in Sydney's Glenmore Park, where Nicholas serves as an altar boy.
The parish hosted a mass dedicated to him and his mother last Saturday, and parishioners are continually asking people to pray for Nicholas's recovery.
"We are praying for the success of the surgeries," parish priest Suresh Kumar said.
Funeral to be held for pilot killed in crash
Meanwhile, a funeral for pilot Ash Jenkinson – who was killed in the crash – is being held on Friday at Southport Church of Christ.
The 40-year-old died when the helicopter he was piloting as part of Sea World Helicopters' scenic tours collided with another helicopter.
British couple Diane and Ron Hughes were also killed.
A mother and son from Geelong in Victoria – Winnie De Silva and her son Leon De Silva – are both in a stable condition after also being injured in the accident.
