Police have charged the man suspected of driving his car at an Australian MP, with Helen Haines still fighting for her life in hospital after having surgery to amputate a leg.

A police statement said Brendan Nugent, 43, was charged with intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and causing harm to a federal official.
