Heinz bosses have stepped in to explain where you should store ketchup, after a new survey revealed 40 per cent of Brits are doing it wrong.
The longstanding debate on where red sauce belongs in the kitchen is not new, and is still a hot topic on social media. Some swearing it belongs in a room temperature cupboard, while others must always keep the condiment chilled in the fridge.
But now, makers of the condiment are here to settle the argument - and there's only "one correct answer". According to Olivia Lennon of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, it should be kept in the fridge.
As reported by Nottinghamshire Live, she said: “There was only ever one correct answer, and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers across the UK that our ketchup has to be in the fridge."
Keeping ketchup in the cupboard won't result in food poisoning as its natural acidity makes it shelf stable. However, Olivia said that doing so can impact its zesty flavour.
She added:"Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening. This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”
This comes after a study of 2,000 Brits found that four in ten have been incorrectly keeping red sauce in the cupboard over the fridge According to findings, 62 per cent of Sheffield residents use the cupboard method, making them the worst culprits.
The argument, which has seen hot takes on social media from the likes of Cardi B and Victoria Beckham wading into the debate (news flash - they’re both wrong) has been a controversial topic for years.
The research also shows that this is one debate men and women can agree on - though Heinz confirms they are, in fact, both incorrect! The study shows that two fifths of men (41%) and women (41%) are keeping their ketchup in the cupboard.
So there you have it. Next time your adding a dollop of ketchup to your bacon sarnie, burger or chips, make sure to pop it in the fridge once finished.
