Spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or SCAD, is usually described as a heart attack that strikes otherwise healthy women. But a case report about a 25-year-old man, which MedicalDaily covered this week, is a reminder that men get SCAD too. When they do, what happens just before the artery tears can look quite different.
The clearest picture comes from the Canadian SCAD Study, one of the greatest efforts to compare men and women with the condition. About a quarter of men in that research reported lifting more than 50 pounds before their SCAD. Among women, the figure was about 7%.
