Parts of New York State are currently experiencing heavy snowfall due to lake-effect snow. This weather phenomenon occurs when cold air moves across relatively warm waters, in this case, Lake Ontario. As a result, the moisture from the lake is lifted into the colder air, creating intense snowfall in the downwind areas.
On Wednesday, the city of Watertown, New York, received significant snowfall, with additional amounts expected throughout the day. Reports suggest that 30 inches (78 centimeters) of snow could accumulate in Watertown, while other parts of the state may receive up to four feet (over a meter) of snow by the end of the day.
