Heavy flooding leaves streets in Dumfries submerged in water as police urge public to avoid area

Heavy flooding has left streets in Dumfries submerged in water after a danger to life warning was issued by the Met Office. Members of the public are being urged to avoid the Whitesands area due to heavy flooding as stormy conditions battered the country on Friday.

Nithsdale Police urged people to steer clear of the area due to hidden hazards as they shared a warning on social media. Posting a video on Twitter, the force said the flood water had entered Friars Vennel and is across the road at Whitesands/Shakespeare Street junction.

In the 16-second clip shared online, the road is submerged with deep rain water. The post said: "This is the current scene on #Whitesands in #Dumfries. The flood water has entered Friars Vennel & is across the road at Whitesands/Shakespeare Street junction. Please do not enter flood water as there can be hidden hazards."
