May’s record-breaking high temperatures caused more shoppers to stay home, new figures show, dampening what was otherwise a positive month for Britain’s high street shops.
While the scorching weather initially encouraged more people to head to the shops at the start May, the intense heatwave led to a 2.6 per cent drop in overall footfall year-on-year for the month, data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Sensormatic showed.
