Heaton man jailed after being caught carrying knife and drugs by police in Byker

A man has been jailed after being stopped by police officers while carrying a knife and drugs in Newcastle.

Brian Harkness was spotted acting suspiciously by officers from Northumbria Police's Neighbourhood Policing Team who were out on patrol in Byker on Friday night.

They then approached the 37-year-old who was subjected to a stop and search on the Shields Road.

Officers recovered a knife and a quantity of drugs which were later found to be Pregablin and diazepam, better known as Valium.

Harkness was swiftly arrested, taken into custody and then charged with possession of a bladed article and a Class C Drug the following day.

Harkness, of Heaton Park Court, admitted both offences when he appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on January 17.

He was jailed for a total of 21 weeks.

Inspector Dave Whelan praised the quick-thinking actions of his officers who spotted Harkness acting suspiciously.

He said: "This case goes to show just how much influence our Neighbourhood Policing Teams can have within our communities.

“This was a very fast-paced investigation which saw Harkness jailed in less than 72 hours from his initial arrest.

“We hope our communities know that where we see criminality, action will be taken.

"There is never an excuse to carry a knife, or any kind of illegal drugs on our streets and firm action will be taken to anyone we find involved in this type of activity.”
