Hearts player showered with chips as fans hurl objects during Edinburgh derby

A Hearts player was forced to cover his head during the Edinburgh derby after being targeted by unruly fans.

Hundreds had gathered at Easter Road for the eagerly awaited Hibs and Hearts clash on Sunday, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

However, fans in the stands and at home watched in horror as some behaviour quickly got out of hand, with Hearts player Alex Cochrane showered in chips at the side of the pitch.

With Hearts leading in the 65th minute, the left wing back had been about to take a throw-in when a small object was hurled at his head.

Quickly covering his head with his hands, Cochrane was seen kneeling to the ground as what appeared to be an entire portion of chips was thrown over him from behind.

Alerting referee John Beaton, the game was briefly halted as Cochrane seemed to explain the situation to other players, and continued to rub the back of his head.

Despite the incident, Cochrane seemed to rally moments later, and returned back to the spot to take the throw-in, before the game continued.

In the minutes that followed, Hearts went on to lose their 1-0 lead after a goal from Martin Boyle managed to level the playing field just moments before the end of the game.
