There are a number of oesophageal cancer warning signs that everyone should know and look out for.
Oesophageal cancer, which develops in the tube that connects your throat to your stomach, is the sixth most prevalent cancer in the world. More than 900 cases of the cancer are diagnosed every year in Scotland, with diagnosis most common in people over the age of 55, according to NHS Scotland.
Unfortunately, the survival rate for oesophageal cancer is 40.4 per cent in Scotland. However, early diagnosis can help improve the chance of survival meaning it is important to know the warning signs to look out for.
According to NHS Inform, experiencing difficulty swallowing or heartburn on most days for three weeks or more could be a warning sign of the disease.
These signs are often difficult to spot as they are associated with a host of different conditions and may usually not be a cause for concern. However, it is important to seek medical advice if any symptoms are present.
