Heartbroken dad of young man killed by train in Meath speaks out as son is laid to rest

The heartbroken dad of a young man who was tragically killed by an express train has thanked people for their “love, support and kindness” ahead of his son’s funeral today.

Jonathon (Johnny) Hughes Flanagan, 22, from Skerries in north county Dublin, died after the horror incident which happened at Gormanston Train Station on Wednesday, September 14.

His tragic death has left local communities numbed and shocked.

It is believed the young dad, who was living in Balbriggan and a pal in his 30s, were taking a shortcut via the railway tracks at Gormanston Train Station when a Dublin to Belfast express train collided with the two men.

Mr Flanagan was treated at the scene by emergency services but he was later pronounced dead.

His body was taken to Navan mortuary for a post mortem examination.

His pal, aged in his 30s, was treated for shock at the scene.

Jonathon is survived by his heartbroken parents Ann and John, sister Raeann, brother Jai and Luke, step mum and dad Lorraine and John, his daughter Macie and his extended family and a large circle of friends.

His funeral is set to take place this morning in St Patrick’s Church, Skerries for 12 noon Mass followed by burial afterwards in Ardla Cemetery, Skerries, his death notice on RIP.ie stated.

His grieving dad has now thanked everyone for their “love, support and kindness” his family has received since Jonathon’s tragic death.

In a post on social media, John Flanagan wrote, along with posting details of Jonathon’s funeral, “Johnny’s final journey."

"Thank you everyone for the love, support and kindness our family has received over the last few days.”

A series of investigations are underway following the tragic death of Mr Flanagan.
