Heartbreaking moment Scots woman plunged to her death in tragic holiday fall recalled by eyewitness

A traumatised woman has recalled the heartbreaking moment she saw a Scots woman tragically fall to her death from a Spanish hotel earlier this week.

Jane Lloyd was staying in the same hotel where Marie Riley lost her life on Monday.

Marie, 37, from Paisley, died after falling from the balcony of her room at the Sol Pelicanos Ocas hotel in Benidorm.

The accommodation is a favourite among visiting Brits - best known among many visitors as the stand-in for the fictional Solana hotel in the ITV show named after the Spanish tourist trap.

Jane says she has been left shaken and unable to stop thinking about the incident on March 7.

She told the Record how she and friend Stuart Bell had been sitting on the balcony of his eighth-floor room when tragedy struck.

Jane, 54, from Plymouth, said: "I was sitting with my chair to the back of the balcony and my friend Stu was sitting facing it.

"We were sat there chatting and all of a sudden there was this horrendous noise.

"I said 'What was that?' and I saw something just out the corner of my eye and I flinched.

"Stu shouted 'Oh my god, that was a person' and he just lost it. It all happened so quick.

"I was in denial but he insisted: 'It was, it was, it was.'

"He said there was a woman dead on the floor.

"I just didn't believe him.

"He ran down to the reception to tell them and I edged my way onto the balcony to look."

Jane's worst fears were realised when she looked over the balcony as Stuart sprinted down flights of stairs to the reception to notify hotel staff of the tragedy.

She added: "Even then, I didn't believe it was true.

"I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

"It must be awful for her poor wife. I can't imagine what she's going through."

Earlier this week we reported how Marie had arrived in the resort town on Monday March 7 just hours before tragedy struck.

Grief-stricken Lynne then broke the tragic news to pals via social media hours later.

Loved ones flooded Facebook with tributes to the Paisley woman, describing her as "a beautiful lassie" and "genuinely one in a million".

The exact circumstances of Marie's death remain unclear.

The investigation has being handled by the Policia Nacional, Spain's national police corps, rather than by local cops.

The force handling the investigation is yet to respond to the Record's requests for comment.

Representatives for hotel chain Melia, which operates the Sol Pelicanos Orcas, also failed to respond to multiple enquiries.

But staff at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) say they are continuing to support Marie's family.

A spokesperson said: "We are assisting the family of a British woman following an incident in Benidorm and in contact with the Spanish authorities."
