Heartbreak as horse Adagio suffers fatal heart attack days before big race

A trainer has told of his "enormous sadness" after the death of one of his top horses. Adagio was one fo the favorites to with the big-money Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday.

But his trainer David Pipe has told how the animal died on the gallops on Thursday morning. He said Adagio suffered a fatal heart attack.

In a post on Twitter he wrote: "It is with enormous sadness I have to report that Adagio has suffered a fatal heart attack on the gallops this morning. His owners and everyone at Pond House are beyond heartbroken. #Adagio #FlyHigh."

Fans of the horse took to the social media site to voice their own sorrow. @HillyerJames wrote: "Absolutely gutted. Was lucky enough to meet him a few weeks back and was really looking forward to seeing him this season. Thoughts are with connections and everyone at the yard."

And @Rickowhat22 posted: "Devastating loss! So so sorry to hear this! He was a star. Big big condolence." Nick_James66 said: "So sorry, David. Absolutely devastating... he was a good horse with great prospects. He will fly high."

@ScotchGaz2022 said: "Awful news. He was already a star but thought he was only going to get even better."

The five-year-old was 6-1 second favourite for the Cesarewitch on Saturday. It was due to have been ridden by Luke Morris, who rode the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Alpinista last Sunday.
