Heart failure contributed to 452,573 deaths in the United States in 2023, or 14.6% of all deaths nationwide, according to the Heart Failure Society of America's (HFSA) HF Stats 2026 report. The society announced the findings in an Oct. 5, 2026, news release, which also shows the condition taking a growing toll on working-age adults.
The report found that crude heart failure death rates more than doubled among adults ages 25 to 44 over two decades, while hospitalizations climbed for adults under 65 even as they fell for older Americans.
